Service Downtown

CanterbuyNYC Downtown gives back to our communities locally, nationally and internationally in a variety of ways.

Some projects in recent years have included:

Saturday, February 23, Service Day with Grace Church

  • SERVE A MEAL TO OUR NEIGHBORS IN NEED – Volunteers of all ages will serve a meal together at Hope for Our Neighbors in Need, the soup kitchen of Church of the Village (201 W. 13th St.). We will be serving from 11:30 am to 3pm.

  • DON’T WALK BY – An annual winter outreach effort to the homeless in lower Manhattan, “Don’t Walk By” is an afternoon/early evening program of meeting people who live on the street, encouraging New Yorkers to put into practice the parable of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37). Over the past decade, Don’t Walk By volunteers have canvassed the streets of Manhattan, met over 10,000 individuals and invited them back to a host site for a hot meal, clothing, basic medical care, and connection to ongoing support. Concerned you won’t know what to say? Don’t worry—the afternoon begins with training. You can sign up for either canvassing in the streets or hospitality at the host site, and various time slots are available. Volunteers must be 18 and up.

  • UNITY HOUSE HABITAT FOR HUMANITY BUILD DAY– Join with volunteers from Grace and the Islamic service organization Who is Hussain on our jointly sponsored Habitat for Humanity house in Jamaica, Queens. Volunteers of all skill levels are welcome as we renovate an affordable home for a family. Read about Unity House in the Winter Issue of The Episcopal New Yorker here. Must be 16 and up. Contact the Rev. Chase Danford to sign up for the carpool leaving from the church.
