Canterbury Downtown

Canterbury Downtown’s Tenth Anniversary Dinner

Peter came and said to Jesus, “Lord, if another member of the church sins against me, how often should I forgive? As many as seven times?” Jesus said to him, “Not seven times, but, I tell you, seventy-seven times.”
–Matthew 18:21

Last Sunday night was a night of celebration! Not only did The Right Reverend Allen K. Shin attend the six o’clock church service, but he broke the news that our very own Chaplain Mary Cat Young had just delivered her baby – more news on that here. After the service, in which we learned about the nature of forgiveness from our Suffragan Bishop, Canterbury Downtown was given a lovely catered meal and the opportunity to question Bishop Shin about his work in the diocese.

What struck me the most about our new Bishop was that he had such a passion for promoting student worship communities like ours. An engaging speaker both in his sermon and in casual conversation, Bishop Shin was extremely interested in what we had to say about our little community, and about how we hope to make it grow. What a pleasure to meet someone as humble and knowledgeable as The Right Reverend Allen Shin!

This week, I will personally take away the Bishop’s message that communication can greatly improve our lives and our relationships with other people. A phrase as simple as “I’m sorry” or “I forgive you” can go a long way, and a small discussion about faith can bring you much closer to those around you. Canterbury Downtown thanks our Suffragan Bishop for attending our little gathering, and a safe trip to and from Taiwan!
