This Sunday: Ascension Forum on Immigration

This Sunday, the Church of the Ascension will be hosting a forum on immigration, entitled “I am not the Mouth for these Ears.” The forum features a conversation with Marco Saavedra, a 27 year old undocumented writer and painter requesting political asylum in the United States. Marco came to the U.S. with his parents at the age of 3. He currently works at his parents’ well-reviewed Mexican restaurant, La Morada, in the South Bronx. In 2012 he turned himself in to Border Patrol in Florida to expose abuses occurring in Broward Transitional Center and with the backing of the National Immigrant Youth Alliance secured the release of dozens of detainees. The following summer he self-deported to Mexico to connect with youth deported during the Obama administration, and when a group sought asylum at the Arizona border, they became known as the Dream 9.
